Looking for Work in June 2020

Updated: Jan 30, 2022

It goes without saying that we are living in a very difficult time right now. The pandemic’s economic impact has been devastating to many, especially for those in a line of work that cannot be performed from home (i.e. restaurant, retail, transportation, manufacturing, entertainment industries).

And office workers have been highly impacted as well. Because of the economic strain brought on by the health crisis, many corporations have imposed hiring freezes until such time that it appears, we can “get back to normal.” So, even for workers in office-type work, there is less of it to go around right now. And if you are trying to get this type of work, you will be bumping up against hiring freezes in most cases.

Yes, many corporations are still posting job openings on platforms such as LinkedIn and Indeed. They are trying to maintain their pipeline of candidates for when things begin to turn for the better, amongst other strategic corporate considerations. However, in most cases, these “openings” are not truly live. They are positions which will open- up sometime in the future when the health crisis becomes more under control.

Pardon the baseball analogy but we are in, say, the 2nd inning of a 9-inning game. It may feel like the 7th or 8th because we have been at this for months on end and we are all tired; we have never been through anything like this before and we all want it over very badly but there’s much more of this in front of us than behind us.

We are proceeding with more widespread societal re-opening, but we are not “all clear.” Unfortunately, the virus is going to be with us for some time so we will need to adapt as best we can in the meantime.

Included below is a link to an article by Atlanta’s 11 Alive. In the article they provide some solid advice for pursuing remote work and provided a listing of 35+ companies that are hiring for work from home positions. I hope you find this helpful.
